Science for Solutions: Improving ocean governance and planning of ABNJ in the Western Indian Ocean and Southeast Atlantic
UNEP-WCMC co-hosted a workshop as part of the ABNJ Deep Seas Project alongside the Nairobi Convention Secretariat, the Abidjan Convention Secretariat and the STRONG UNEP South Africa workshopHigh Seas Project. The workshop presented a unique opportunity to bring Member States to present and discuss ocean sustainability and governance in Africa. As well as presenting the progress and scientific work completed under the ABNJ Deep Seas Project, UNEP-WCMC facilitated an area-based planning session to collect regional and sectoral perspectives and input on a framework for marine spatial planning (MSP) in ABNJ. The joint workshop enabled Secretariats of the Nairobi Convention and Abidjan Convention to identify areas of common understanding, shared interests and new opportunities for development of long-term strategies and approaches for wider participation and more effective engagement in future regional and global policy negotiations relating to marine and coastal issues.
