Hawai'i Chief Executives Sign Aloha Challenge Declaration

As an island state, Hawai'i shares challenges faced by all islands and is a microcosm of the planet. Launched by the Governor, Hawai'i's four mayors, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs on July 7, 2014, the Aloha+ Challenge: A Culture of Sustainability – He Nohona 'Ae 'oia is a joint leadership commitment to sustainability for the State of Hawai'i.

The State of Hawai'I and U.S. Department of State announced the Aloha+ Challenge internationally at the United Nations' Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (UNSIDS) in Samoa in September 2014.

Hawai'i's six Chief Executives committed to six ambitious targets to build a more secure, sustainable and resilient economy for Hawai'i by 2030:

The Aloha+ Challenge sets six statewide sustainability targets to be achieved by 2030 – in clean energy transformation, local food production, natural resource management, waste reduction, smart growth, climate resilience, green job creation and education. These targets provide a shared framework to set priorities, take action and track progress.

In September 2013, the Honorable Ronald Jumeau, Seychelles Ambassador for Climate Change and Small Island Developing State Issues, and the Global Island Partnership invited Hawai'i to make an international commitment to sustainability. Hawai'i Governor Neil Abercrombie accepted Ambassador Jumeau's invitation to join the Global Island Partnership and "step up and step forward as an island leader."

Inspired by the Global Island Partnership, the Aloha+ Challenge is a commitment to statewide targets and an integrated approach which is strongly supported by the Hawai'i State Legislature, Hawai'i Green Growth, and a growing network of public and private leaders, organizations and communities.

Hawai'i is committed to working and learning with other islands to demonstrate innovative and collaborative solutions that build a more secure, sustainable, and resilient future.

As the most isolated population on the planet, Hawai'i exemplifies the urgent need for action on the global priority for green growth. Hawai'i's people depend on imports for 95% of their energy and 85-90% of their food, at an estimated annual cost of $8.6 billion. Hawai'i is also known as a hot spot for biodiversity loss. Like all islands across the Asia Pacific region, Hawai'i will be on the forefront responding to climate change impacts.

The Aloha+ Challenge was developed and is actively supported by Hawai'i Green Growth (HGG), a partnership of more than 50 leaders from government, non-governmental organizations, business and academia across Hawai'i collaborating on three key strategies to develop the state's green and blue economy.
