The meeting brought together representatives of the islands of the Indian Ocean and coastal areas of East Africa to discuss the proposal for a Western Indian Ocean (WIO) Partnership on adaptation, promoting resilient ecosystems, sustainable livelihoods, and human security. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Caribbean Challenge Initiative, Micronesia Challenge and Coral Triangle Initiative who shared lessons and the progress in establishing their respective regional island challenges. The WIO Planning Meeting resulted in commitment to continue exploring the establishment of a WIO partnership that would focus on environmental and climate change needs and threats and how to address these through implementation of CBD commitments in the region.
